the stool’s concept is inspired by the meaning of ( علم التورية ilm al-Tawriya ), and its literal meaning. It embodies the philosophy of the golden age of Islam, which was defined by a love for seeking knowledge and scientific exploration.
The Golden Islamic Era (Abbasid era) refers to a period of great cultural, intellectual, and scientific achievements in the Islamic world, spanning from the 8th to the 14th century CE. One of the most notable contributions of the Golden Islamic Era was in the field of Arabic literature and poetry, which reached new heights of sophistication and creativity.

Ilm al-Tawriya refers to the idea of using words that have dual meaning, one of which is intended while the other is not. The literal meaning of the word, means hiding or concealing.

Your stool design ingeniously captures the essence of علم التورية, a concept that plays on the dual meanings of words, mirroring the intellectual richness of the Golden Age of Islam. This dual nature is reflected in the design, where the outer stool’s straightforward, cylindrical shape conceals a second, spiral-shaped stool within.
PRODUCTION
Intended for library settings, the stools resonate with the literary and poetic focus of the Golden Islamic Age. The compact design allows for efficient use of space, ideal for scholarly environments where both seating and surface utility are needed.
Using a 3-axis CNC machine to precisely cut wood slices for both stools.
Modify the thickness of the slices based on stress analysis to prevent displacement.
Join the pieces using wood glue for a secure structure.
Sand the assembled stools to smooth out edges, and fill gaps with wood putty.
Apply wood stain to protect and enhance the wood’s natural beauty.
